The Godfather of Soul James Brown may have been dead for quite a while but his trustees still aren’t letting him rest in peace. According to a new report, the said trustees of his estate are questioning the paternity of James Brown II, the son of Brown’s widow Tomi Rae Hynie. A South Carolina judge has just ordered a paternity test for the supposed youngest son of the late musician to bring closure to the issue. The lawyer representing Tomi Rae said that she’s never objected to a paternity test even saying that “She’s said that she was in favor and would do the test, provided that the other children also took the test. She didn’t feel like her son should be singled out.” It’s war of the spawns!

It is being said that singer Sean Levert was physically restrained by jail guards right before he died. Staff at the Cuyahoga County Jail where he was detained said that Levert was “out of control” and “hallucinating” which forced them to place him in a restraining chair as he was a danger to himself. The jail’s warden says that Levert was cooperative when he was bound to the chair. The coroner also says that Levert’s body showed no signs of physical trauma nor do they suspect foul play. They are still waiting on toxicology results to come back – that may take four to six weeks.

Here’s another case of music royalty about to lose their castle. The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin’s Detroit mansion may be lost to the taxman. The said property is worth $700,000 for which Aretha owes a total of $19,192 in back taxes through 2007. The Queen says that she will pay up by the March 31 deadline. Tsk. If she paid on time, it wouldn’t have gotten this big. It was a $445 outstanding bill from the 2005 tax season that pushed for the foreclosure proceedings. The Queen can’t lose her castle! Oh well, if things go bad for Aretha, maybe Tina Turner would let her crash in her castle in Europe.

Keith Richards has warned Amy Winehouse to stay away from drugs.
The Rolling Stones rocker - who has previously battled a heroin addiction - says the troubled ‘Rehab’ singer needs to kick her dangerous habit before it ’s too late. The 64-year-old guitarist, who once infamously joked he had snorted his father’s ashes, said: “She should get her act together.”
The band’s frontman Mick Jagger, who was briefly jailed in 1967 for possessing drugs, has also advised young stars not to follow in the Stones’ notorious footsteps.
Speaking at the Berlin premiere of Rolling Stones documentary ‘Shine a Light ‘, Mick said: “When we were experimenting with drugs, little was known about the effects. In our time there were no rehab centres. Anyway I did not know about them.”
Mick, 64, has previously expressed concern for Amy’s wellbeing saying: “I’m worried she might die if she goes down the road she has taken.”

Aretha Franklin really got pissed when Beyonce deemed her Grammy’s duet partner Tina Turner as ‘The Queen’ but Beyonce’s father Matthew decided to come to the defense of his daughter by releasing a statement to People on Thursday. He says “Something this ridiculous — it’s childish, it’s unprofessional. And it’s a sad day when egos get bruised because somebody used the word king, queen, prince or princess.”
So not only is Aretha not a queen but she’s also a child. The Queen of Soul should really be pissed now! Watch out Matthew, Aretha might unleash the girls on you and have her chest crush your head.

Amy Winehouse must be feeling popular. She has been asked to perform at this years Brit awards – not once, but twice.
She will perform ‘Valerie’ as part of a Mark Ronson medley where Adele and Daniel Merriweather will also take turns to sing with the producer. The lights will then go down and the audience will think that Amy’s show is over.
But the Brit organisers have cleared another spot in the schedule for our troubled singer. The lights will come back up and she will perform a stripped down version of one of her other hits.
A source said: “Amy will be part of the Ronson medley, but she will also do something on her own. Along with Macca she is the night’s big attraction. The lights will come back up and she will sing one of her more emotive hits. It will be a magical moment.”

She may not have been in attendance, but there was no doubt the 2008 Grammys belonged to Amy Winehouse.
The singer, whose personal life is in turmoil, pipped Kanye West by one gong, winning a staggering five out of six awards. She was close to making it a clean sweep but missed out on scooping Album of the Year to little known jazz veteran Herbie Hancock.
After receiving her fifth award, ironically Record of the Year for hit single Rehab, an emotional Amy looked stunned and stared straight ahead for several seconds as the television feed cut to her in the London studio.
She then hugged her mum, Janice and thanked her parents before giving a message to her husband via a satellite link-up.
“To my mum and dad, for my Blake, my Blake incarcerated, Thank you very much, it’s an honor to be here. Thank you very, very much.”

Alanis Morissette is finally returning to the music scene. She has just released a power ballad called ‘Underneath’. The song was produced by Guy Sigsworth, known for his work with Frou Frou and Imogen Heap. A video is also out for the song and it was directed by Matt Docter.
According to Wiki, the song had an unofficial debut on September 15, 2007 at the Kodak Theatre in LA at the Elevate Film Festival. Alanis reportedly submitted her song and just like all other 14 videos shown at the festival, had the song’s video written, directed, shot and edited in two ways.

I think Biggie and Diddy said it best that the “mo’ money you come about, the mo’ problems you see”. James Brown’s problems are even following him to the grave. Five of the music legend’s kids are trying to get their late father’s will scrapped in an attempt to get money for themselves that he had marked for his grandkids and needy children.
They are alleging that their father’s ex-advisors used undue influence to get him to create charitable trusts to help themselves but the will shows that the trusts leave money for the education of Brown’s grandkids. Buddy Dallas, one of Brown’s advisors, calls the charges “an act of desperation.”

Liza Minnelli collapsed during a gig in Sweden this week. And according to reports, she has quickly been flown back to the US for treatment. The AP says that Liza was singing in a Christmas show in Goteborg when she collapsed just as she was walking offstage. A rep for the Swedish concert organizers said that “As she walked down the steps, she passed out. She was immediately taken to her hotel, where a doctor was waiting.”
The 61-year old crooner was then flown back to the US but not cause for the collapse was immediately given. Get well soon Liza!

Aretha Franklin has an upcoming biopic in the works and the diva has revealed that there are three women she’s considering to cast to play her in the movie. And apparently, Halle Berry is one of them!
The ‘Respect’ signer says “I’m still thinking of several people, and that would be Halle Berry, possibly Fantasia, she’ll be through on Broadway in January, and it could be Jennifer Hudson — you never know. There’s no final on that yet. I’m still observing them and their projects. ‘Dreamgirls’ I’ve watched a couple of times lately, and I’m still just trying to arrive at the right decision.”

PJ Harvey’s White Chalk, in my opinion, is one of her greatest releases in recent years. She has created a beautiful array of melancholic tracks that are engrossing and hypnotic. Her voice floats through the poignant lyrics and shines among the intense emotions that are strongly apparent throughout the album.PJ Harvey’s much lauded album White Chalk was released in September this year. Recorded mainly on piano, White Chalk has been described as “a brave and brilliant refocusing of her energies” by Mojo, and as a “haunting mini masterpiece” by the Financial Times.
PJ has chosen to release The Piano from White Chalk. It will be released on November 26th through Island Records. The Piano will be released on download and limited edition 7” vinyl. It is the second single from PJ Harvey’s eighth studio album White Chalk, The Piano will be backed with Heaven, a song written and recorded in 1988 during one of Harvey’s first ever recording sessions.

There’s no shortage of James Taylor hits collections out there, but that doesn’t make this new live CD-DVD, any less welcome. Taylor’s fans regard each reframing of his career as an artistic snapshot of his life at that moment, and this set offers a particularly warm portrait. Recorded at the Colonial Theatre near Taylor’s home in the Berkshires, One Man Band finds the singer re-engaging such classics as “Something in the Way She Moves,” “Sweet Baby James” and “Fire and Rain” in spare, mostly acoustic settings. While the nineteen-track CD is more specifically performance-oriented, the two-hour DVD features Taylor sharing photos, video footage and memories in ways that provide a rich context for his songs. Taylor’s supple baritone remains a wonder of intimacy, and it finds its match in the effortless intricacy of his finger-picking. More recent songs like “My Traveling Star” and “Mean Old Man” hold their own next to the likes of “Shower the People.” Taken together, the One Man Band CD-DVD is more a musical biography than simply a greatest-hits set, Taylor’s latest missive from the long and winding road he’s on.

Velma Warren Brown, a 73-year-old Georgia woman who was James Brown’s first wife, is the latest to step in line for a piece of the late Godfather of Soul’s inheritance, claiming that they never officially divorced. She is seeking a court declaration that the music icon never served her with divorce papers four decades ago. Oh my hell, what do we do with these female gold diggers, at the age of 73 when she doesn’t know for sure if she is going to wake up then next morning alive or not yet she wants the money so that she can die rich even if she couldn’t live like one. I have to say that the obsession with money that our society has is quite unparalleled. Thank goodness I am not a filthy rich person or else I would have scores of women entering my life just for my money not for what I am and what I stand for, well if I would be rich that would matter I could be an insane person like Michael Jackson and yet enjoy the wonders of a woman’s life.

Jools Holland: surely won’t be long before the fourth plinth on Trafalgar Square is occupied with his statue. His vision to enjoy himself, act as a tasteful musical arbiter and share his influences with the general public has now given him a glittering 30 year career. To tie in with the publication of his autobiography, Barefaced Lies & Boogie-Woogie Boasts comes this CD/DVD package of him, his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and the best selections from his well-thumbed Rolodex of stellar chums.
Some of this is fairly standard boogie fare, but there are moments of beauty. Possibly the most unfashionable pairing of all time, Holland and the Stereophonics, deliver a truly beautiful version of Ewan McColl’s “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”. The song may indeed be unbreakable, but this version really is something else. Shane MacGowan sounds on the verge of collapse on “Just To Be Home With You”, and long-time collaborator Sam Brown delivers the genuinely warm “Valentine Moon”. Edwin Starr sings a rambunctious “Snowflake Boogie” and Joe Strummer plays himself perfectly on “The Return Of The Blues Cowboy” – to hear them again sounding so relaxed in the freewheeling company is heart-warming.
However, there are some troublespots – Tom Jones’ “Think” and the Orchestra alone blazing through “Tuxedo Junction” are enough to make any reasonable soul feel queasy. If you like him, you’ll love this. If you don’t, go back to Joan As Policewoman. An accompanying DVD of the making of album and a Gilson Lavis (surely the world’s greatest drummer) interview further add to the fun.

Carlos Santana is certainly one of the all-time greatest guitarists. However, since his 1999 comeback album Supernatural, Santana has simply repeated the formula of taking a backseat to the day’s biggest pop stars. The new single “Into The Night” will only sound fresh to those who have spent the past 6 years in a cave. To even the most casual music fan, however, “Into the Night” plays just like any Nickelback song with some extra electric guitar. Although certainly catchy, “Into The Night” does not linger in the listener’s head as it’s steady beat and cookie cutter production help it come and go making little impact. This tale of instant love serves best as background music for a late-night party or an Adult Contemporary playlist. Fortunately for Santana and his fan base, “Into The Night” serves as a lead single for the hits package Ultimate Santana. The album combines hits from the musician’s recent albums, as well as classics from his band at its prime. So, while “Into the Night” alone provides little motivation for the purchase, the promise of the guitar master’s best work should be irresistible for any pop fan without Santana’s previous work in their collection.

Before he was The Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra was just a skinny kid from New Jersey with a big voice and bigger dreams.
And while there are plenty of compilations devoted to Old Blue Eyes’ later years and greater hits, the young Frank often gets short shrift.
Not any more. That Sinatra is the one in the spotlight on the superior new box set A Voice in Time: 1939 - 1952. And an illuminating work it is. Over the course of 80 songs on four CDs, this stylish box follows Frank’s evolution from youthful big band crooner to the most famous and acclaimed singer of his generation.
Disc 1: The Big Band Years covers 1939 to ‘42, when he began his career singing with Tommy Dorsey and Harry James, handling hits of the day like All or Nothing at All and I’ll be Seeing You. Some of Sinatra’s first studio and live recordings are gathered here. Disc 2: Teen Idol picks up the story in 1943, when Frank became the first pop star, crooning for throngs of bobbysoxers whose piercing screams drown out the band on some of the live cuts. Disc 3: The Great American Songbook concentrates on the standards Frank cut in the mid-’40s. All of Me, I Get a Kick out of You, That Old Black Magic, It Had to be You are all here, with plenty more where they came from. Finally, Disc 4: The Sound of Things to Come follows Frank from ‘49 to ‘52, his final years with Columbia before he signed with Capitol and took his career to the next level.
If that doesn’t paint a portrait of the artist as a young man, nothing will.

Just because they’re old doesn’t mean they can’t make some great new music. Grammy winners Eric Clapton and Chaka Khan are offering up new releases for new and old fans.
Eric Clapton has had a productive year. He had a world tour, performed at the Crossroads Guitar Festival and his highly anticipated book ‘Clapton, The Autobiography’ was released last week on the same day that a two-disc album, ‘Complete Clapton, spanning his career was released. His 40-year career is captured in one package and even features songs from his days in Cream and Blind Faith.
In the meantime, Chaka Khan offers new material and covers on her first studio album in over 10 years ‘Funk This’. The whole album was produced by Flytetyme Productions run by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
The covers in the disc include songs by Prince, Joni Mitchell and Michael McDonald. There’s also a due with Mary J. Blige called ‘Disrespectful’ which sounds like a throwback to Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’.
