Critics said that musical TV would never work. Obviously, they’ve never heard of ‘Glee’. With less than 10 episodes under their belt, the show is proving to be one of the biggest shows of the year, with not only great weekly ratings but also fantastic showings on the iTunes Top 200 Download lists. The show currently has 10 songs holding strong, including their versions of Queen’s ‘Somebody to Love’, Heart’s ‘Alone’, Kanye West’s ‘Gold Digger’, Rihanna’s ‘Take a Bow’ and Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin’. In total, the musical catalog for the show has surpassed the 1 million download mark and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight.
Jimi Hendrix is set to be immortalized in a computer game.
The legendary guitar player will be revived in the latest edition of ‘Guitar Hero’ which is due to be released in the autumn.
The ‘Foxy Lady’ singer – who died after drowning in his own vomit, after taking prescription drugs and drinking red wine in 1970 aged just 27 – will feature as a playable character in the game.
His song ‘The Wind Cries Mary’ and a live version of ‘Purple Haze’ recorded in 1969 at the San Diego Sports Arena will feature on ‘Guitar Hero: World Tour’, with more of the rocker’s back catalogue available as downloadable content.
The fourth version of the game will include an eight-player Battle of the Bands feature which allows two groups – each boasting drums, guitars and microphones – to compete against each other.
Many bands have enjoyed a new lease of life after allowing their songs to be used on the game. Legendary heavy metal group Iron Maiden reported a surge in downloads after several of their tracks, including the classic ‘Run To The Hills’, were featured.
Metallica has a new marketing ploy for the more sombre of you.
It’s a “Death Magnetic” coffin box that will have a copy of the actual album, an additional disc of demos, a “making of the album” DVD, an exclusive T-shirt, a flag, guitar picks and a fold-out poster.
Plus, the box includes a collector’s credit card embossed with a code to redeem a free download of a special European show that’s happening in September.
The Metallica Website tells us that the band is in the process of wrapping up the artwork for the coffin-shaped box and items in it, but it will come out the same day the album does this fall.
It’s only going to be available online through Metallica’s web site.
Nine solo albums by the late George Harrison have been made available to download for the first time. The announcement means solo music by all four members of The Beatles can now be purchased digitally. Isn’t this some great news for all Beatle fans and the entire music community, our music needs to be free and not bound by the clutches of record companies who will pay the artist some exorbitant amount of money to make albums and they we have to pay a hell lot to buy their CDs. I also somehow support the thing that pop artist Prince did some time back when his new CD was made available for free with a newspaper during the distribution. The conclusion of a lengthy legal battle between the band’s label Apple Corps and Apple Inc, which owns iTunes, paved the way for the developments. Well once these albums see the daylight for being available for download then I think there shall be a movement for more such albums to follow suit.
