Kelly Clarkson was among the many stars who performed at the 2009 Grammy Salute to Industry Icons honoring Clive Davis at the Beverly Hilton Hotel this past Saturday in Beverly Hills, California. The 26-year old original American Idol champion received one of the evening’s biggest standing ovations after her performance of her new single ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ and her own rendition of the Janis Joplin classic ‘Piece of My Heart’. That Joplin song is a really tough one to belt out. If I get to see even just a poorly taken video of her performance, I would have given her a standing ovation just for getting the notes right.

If you consider the look on Justin Guarini’s face, then you could say that it’s frightening how big of a difference it makes to be the runner up for something. While Kelly Clarkson has played the big people stage at Universal’s Gibson Amphitheatre, her American Idol runner up Justin is forced to rock out a free gig on the City Walk. To this date, only runner up Clay Aiken is more successful than the champ. Unless of course you count Chris Daughtry and Elliot Yamin. However, those two weren’t second placers. Elliot came close though. I’m sure he was glad he didn’t.
