Forgotten Journal

Les Paul, the musician and inventor who changed the course of rock music, passed away from complications due to pneumonia this past Thursday. As an inventor, he developed the electric guitar and multi track recording, which allows artists to record different instruments at different times, sing harmony with themselves and balance tracks afterwards. Music wouldn’t be as it is today without him. Les Paul garnered 36 gold records and 11 number 1 pop hits with his wife Mary from 1949 to 1962 and won two Grammys for ‘Les Paul & Friends: American Made, World Played’, which was released after his 90th birthday. He was 94 years old when he passed away but his legacy will live on forever.

A lot of fans were angered when the Grammys failed to mention the late LeRoi Moore, the saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band, in the awards show’s encore segment honoring music industry movers who passed away in the past year. In response, the Academy issued a statement saying “Nearly 250 members of our music community have passed in the last year, and all of them have been listed in the program book for the 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards, including LeRoi Moore. For the “Encore” segment of our annual GRAMMY Awards telecast, unfortunately we are unable to include all of the talented and wonderful people within the allotted timeframe. The Academy recognizes Moore’s contributions to music and music education, and we are deeply saddened by his premature passing.” Snub!

Kelly Clarkson was among the many stars who performed at the 2009 Grammy Salute to Industry Icons honoring Clive Davis at the Beverly Hilton Hotel this past Saturday in Beverly Hills, California. The 26-year old original American Idol champion received one of the evening’s biggest standing ovations after her performance of her new single ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ and her own rendition of the Janis Joplin classic ‘Piece of My Heart’. That Joplin song is a really tough one to belt out. If I get to see even just a poorly taken video of her performance, I would have given her a standing ovation just for getting the notes right.

The people behind the Grammys have a lot of explaining and apologizing to do. In their annual Memorial Tribute which pays respect to members of the music industry who have passed away in the previous year, they managed to leave out a 12 time nominee and 1 time winner. LeRoi Moore, one of the founding members and the saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band, was a surprisingly absent from the video. The musician passed away last August due to complications from an ATV accident. Is there a reason that the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences somehow “forgot” to put him in the video?

John Mayer is finally getting the attention he deserves not just as the other half f the Jennifer Aniston-John Meyer love story but this time for his own talent. Meyer has just been nominated for a Grammy Award and as if that was not enough, his blues duet with BB KIng stole the Grammy Awards nominations day!

A duet from the king of blues and the prince of pop rock is something out of the ordinary and you bet the two sounded great together as they held their audience captive to their simultaneous guitar lick. The BB King and Meyer combination singing “Let The Good Times Roll”, which was popu8larized by BB King in the 70s, made the announcement night more exciting for Grammy fans.

This was the first time that the announcement of the Grammy nominees was made via television and the striking performances of Mariah Carey who sang “Baby Please Come Home” in her female Santa costume and Christina Aguilera who rendered the jazzy “I Love You Porgy” only made it more memorable.

The list of Grammy nominees this year was populated by the Brits topped by Coldplay who got seven nods. Among the other Brits who got nominated were Leona Lewis, Adele, Duffy and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin. Jennifer Hudson was elated when she got 4 Grammy nominations. The nominees will have to hold their breaths until the winners are announced on February 8 next year.

Tina Turner says Beyonce Knowles will never be “rock ‘n’ roll.” The ‘Simply the Best’ singer claims she was an inspiration for Beyonce, but although she is a great singer the former Destiny’s Child star will never match her for raw talent.

Tina said: “Beyonce was one of the ones that were sitting in front of her little television, her little self looking at the big screen when I was Tina in the ‘Ike and Tina Turner days’ and she took from all the stars at the time. Diana Ross influenced her, I influenced her. What I like about her is that she knows what she’s doing, she really did her homework and decided to stay elegant. She’s not rock ‘n’ roll – she’s totally elegant. Unless your rock ‘n’ roll from the heart you can’t mimic that. The stance, the movements, it has to come from the inside.”

Tina, 68, and Beyonce, 26, performed together at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards this February.

Aretha Franklin really got pissed when Beyonce deemed her Grammy’s duet partner Tina Turner as ‘The Queen’ but Beyonce’s father Matthew decided to come to the defense of his daughter by releasing a statement to People on Thursday. He says “Something this ridiculous — it’s childish, it’s unprofessional. And it’s a sad day when egos get bruised because somebody used the word king, queen, prince or princess.”

So not only is Aretha not a queen but she’s also a child. The Queen of Soul should really be pissed now! Watch out Matthew, Aretha might unleash the girls on you and have her chest crush your head.
