Gloria Estefan treated 2000 lucky winners to her concert in Puerto Rico this past weekend. Close to 17,000 Puerto Rican government workers in the country are being laid off due to the recession. The country has a 15 percent unemployment rate, higher than any of the states. The singer bought all of the remaining upper level tickets to be raffled off to some of the laid off employees. I’m sure that it made a lot of people happy. That was very generous of her. She just gave everyone another reason to love her. I wonder if she has any jobs that she could offer them too.

Emilio Estefan, Grammy Award winning music producer and the husband of singer Gloria Estefan, was one of the appointed individuals by President Obama to be on the Commission to Study the Potential Creation of a National Museum of the American Latino. Obama said “I am pleased to appoint these outstanding men and women to the Commission to Study the Potential Creation of a National Museum of the American Latino – a museum that would be dedicated to celebrating the history and achievements of Latinos in America. It is fitting that, as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, these individuals will reinvigorate the efforts of this commission to honor the contributions of Latinos and Latinas to our country.”

Pop sing Gloria Estefan has announced that her upcoming Latin America tour shall be her very last concert tour and that she will hang up her boots once the tour ends. Gloria started her career in 1975 and now 25 years later she is bringing the curtains down in Latin America where it all started for her.
Last year Gloria announced that in order to spend more time and be an active part of the upbringing of her 14 year old daughter Emily Marie she would she would start reducing the amount of time she spends on tour. Making this announcement the pop singer said: “it is an end to something that began many years ago, in 1975, and it is a dream to be able to do it in Latin America.”
Everyone has to take this call at some point in time, some because they aren’t good enough to remain in business and some like Gloria take this decision because of family and personal reasons. Some old artist would not leave stage because family is not important to them but it’s really good to see that Gloria has her daughter’s upbringing on top of her mind.

Beyonce wasn’t the only celebrity recognized at the glitzy and pricey Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation Diamond Ball. Miami’s own Gloria Estefan was also a distinguished recipient of the award. Congratulations go out to her! The Latin singer will also be honored at the Latin Grammy’s next month as their ‘Person of the Year’. I guess there are lots of reasons to celebrate in the Estefan household this month. Though I have to ask, what kind of award is ‘Person of the Year’? Couldn’t they just award her with an achievement award or something? It seems to me that they’re just trying to pull some things in by giving her that award.

She said she’s never going to tour again but we all know how farewells go in the music business. Gloria Estefan didn’t take her farewell tour overseas a few years ago so the Latina superstar began taking her final goodbye outing recently in Valencia, Spain. The singer performed to a massive crowd of 50,000 fans. Gloria will continue her tour all throughout October, hitting many cities across Europe. She says that she’s ruled out any other major tours after this one but she has left the door open for one-off shows and maybe even a Las Vegas residency. Everyone ends up in Vegas sooner or later.

One of the reasons Gloria Estefan retired from touring is that she has enough money to last for the rest of her life. In addition to that, she’s also a businesswoman. On Thursday, the singer and her husband Emilio celebrated the opening of Costa d’Este Beach Resort in Vero Beach, Florida. They own that hotel as well as another hotel in Miami Beach, a few restaurants and other businesses. In other words, they’re loaded. Of their new venture, Gloria said “We developed this stunning resort because it made good business sense, but it was also a labor of love because Vero Beach is our home away from home and has been for six years. And we wanted to share this special community with vacationers from around the world.”
