I’ll bet there isn’t a woman out there who hasn’t, at one point in their lives, sung this song loud and proud. Whether it be in your bath tub, at your ex boyfriend or on a drunken karaoke night with the girls – admit it you’ve all done it.
After 30 years of its release, Gloria Gaynor continues to ride the success of “I Will Survive,” touring the country and the world over and performing her signature song on dozens of TV shows.
A few successful remixes of the song during the 1990s and 2000s along with new versions of the song by Diana Ross, Chantay Savage, rock group Cake and others as well as constant recurrent airplay on nearly all Soft AC and Rhythmic format radio stations have helped to keep the song in the mainstream.
Now in 2008, Gloria celebrates the 30th Anniversary of her Grammy Award winning song. The lyrics of this song are written from the point of view of a woman, recently dumped, telling her former lover that she can cope without him and does not want anything more to do with him. The song has become something of an anthem of female emancipation, and is still a staple of office parties and karaoke nights.

The diva has really done it this time! Diana Ross actually pissed off a crowd of 40,000 at the 2008 Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival on Saturday where the 63-year old was booed and heckled by Jamaicans in attendance at Montego Bay after organizers told them that “to honor Miss Ross’ wishes, she will not be shown on the monitors”. That piece of news was met with a whole lot of hissing. The audience in the stadium-sized arena was unable to see the diva onstage but she wouldn’t allow to put her performance on the big screen but she would not go on stage if any cameras were present. The booing continued for her whole hour-long set when the crowd beyond the first section couldn’t even see her.

It’s a time for mourning for many stars in the past couple of weeks. We first had Jane Seymour lose her mother, Marie Osmond lose her father, Kanye West bury his mother and now, Diana Ross suffers through the loss of her father.
The legendary singer gave one of the most emotional performance of her career on Tuesday night when she revealed to the audience at her show at the Gibson Amphitheater in Los Angeles that her father had passed away earlier that morning. But like a true performer, she decided to go on with the show.
One concertgoer said that “It was very touching. Diana was close to tears throughout the show and at one point brought out her entire family on stage in celebration of her dad.”
