Apparently, it’s not just those pre-packaged pop stars who rely on pre-recorded audio for performances. The superstar quartet made up of cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Itzhak Perlman, pianist Gabriela Montero and clarinetist Anthony McGill reportedly used a previously recorded audio tape for the broadcast of Barack Obama’s inauguration. A spokesperson for the inauguration committee said that the weather was to blame explaining “They were very insistent on playing live until it became clear that it would be too cold.” Apparently, instruments don’t stay completely on tune in cold weather. People sitting close heard them play but their instruments weren’t amplified. Perlman told a reporter “It would have been a disaster if we had done it any other way. This occasion’s got to be perfect. You can’t have any slip-ups.” So how come the Marine band got to play live?
