Which is more likely – Sting writing ‘Roxanne’ about prostitutes while traveling in Paris or Sting co-writing it in the basement of his Reno home with a guy he met at a restaurant? According to a police report filed by Roy Smith, Sting heard him singing at Molly’s Garden Restaurant in 1977, thought he was good and asked him to hang out. They hung out in Sting’s basement drinking beers, during which time, Smith told Sting about an ex named Roxanne who was a prostitute and about writing letters to his late father which he then put in a bottle. Smith claims that Sting agreed to give him royalties for the songs, but never did. But that’s not all – Smith also claims that Sting tried to contact him through his mom but that she didn’t relay the messages because she though that the real police were after her son. Stupid!
