Sweet Caroline...La La La - Neil Diamond and Caroline Kennedy

You’ve sung it in the shower, you’ve sung it with your mates, you may have even braved the karaoke and belted it out one drunken evening, but have you ever wondered who the “Sweet Caroline” is that Neil Diamond wrote the song about? We all know and love (or loathe) the song, but for over 40 years Diamond has kept the secret of the true identity. But this week he reveals that he was inspired by a photograph of President Kennedy’s daughter, when she was about 10 years old.

“It was a picture of a little girl dressed to the nines in her riding gear, next to her pony,” Diamond recalled. “It was such an innocent, wonderful picture; I immediately felt there was a song in there.”

And years later that song came out, in less than an hour during a visit to a motel in Memphis.

The song was a No. 1 hit, and Neil got the opportunity to finally release his secret over satellite at Caroline Kennedy’s 50th birthday party last week.

Warm, touchin’ warm
Reachin’ out
Touchin’ me
Touchin’ you

These words were inspired by a 10 year old girl. Sweet or creepy? You decide. Caroline Kennedy is said to be “struck” by the revelation and very happy. Good for her.
